El Matuy is located in Palomino, Guajira, 70 km (44 mi) from Santa Marta and 90 km (56 mi) from Riohacha, making it easily accessible from both cities.
El Matuy is a place designed to offer rest, peace, and good food. If reading a book in a hammock, sleeping in, and looking at the stars every night are your type of plans, this is the perfect place for you. Within El Matuy you will be able to find a tropical dry forest, a lagoon filled with herons and water lilies and enjoy more than 100 meters of beach where you won’t be bothered by anyone. Due to the proximity to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (the highest coastal mountain range in the world) there is one river at each side of the hotel, both easily reached by a short walk on the beach. At El Matuy you will be able to enjoy an unforgettable time, in which each day you will feel more relaxed and with more energy.
Food at El Matuy is based on fresh ingredients, taking advantage of the region’s richness in fruits and vegetables, as well as the great diversity of seafood. To top it all off, we cook all of our meals on a wood burning stove. You can watch a video on how we cook the food at El Matuy by clicking here.
We also have a beach volleyball court, lounge chairs, hammocks, and kiosks at the beach, and we offer several day trips. One of them is to hike the Sierra Nevada for about an hour following the course of the Palomino river and then go down the river using inner tubes as rafts while admiring the forest and the birds. There are also several sites of interest close to El Matuy such as the Tayrona National Park, Quebrada Valencia, and the Flamingos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary.
Besides as being an eco-hotel, El Matuy has been committed to the conservation of the environment from the beginning when we became members of the Colombian Network of Private Natural Reserves. The travel website TripAdvisor recognized our environmental commitment and awarded us as GreenLeaders – Gold Level.
